One of the little pleasures that I relish is going to a book fair and scouring the rows and rows of boxes for a few surprises and lost treasures. The Mission was one of these and yes, one that I now rate highly as a gem. Thank you Patrick Tilley. I'd never heard of it. Didn't google it until after completing it. Nobody in my circles (other box mongers) of association had heard of it when the title slipped into conversations. I found this strange as I could find the relevance (being the average Joe and all) and just knew while reading it, it had cult classic written into it. Really, all you need to know is that the resurrection of Christ is the basis for all Christianity to rally around redeemption and the truth and gifts bestowed on those who believe and sacrifice. The Mission stands this theory on it's head and masterfully ties in so many deep, creative nad entertaining views and angles. In the end, Leo Resnick (another average Joe) is presented with the resurrection of Christ. Not the Pope, not the Rabi, or anybody else you thought had a better seat for the show. That's the way god would have wanted it.
