Web Design 101

I am currently innvolved with an ad firm that is looking to get more into the web development side of things. Since I started working there, I’ve come to realize that there are a few things that I have to brush up on so that my work can be done faster and more efficiently. Chief amongst that is a need to brush up on web designing - the usual jazz: HTML, CSS, a bit of scripting, connecting to a database etc.

I am fairly well-versed with Dreamweaver and consider my HTML to be good enough for me to read the source page and understand what the hell it all means. But that’s not enough. In all honesty, I have to brush up on HTML, preferably from the very beginning. My question to you guys, cause I know there are a few IT savvy people reading this, is where should I begin?

I’ve lost my way around the heap of acronyms, standards and version numbers to the point where its got really confusion. Where does, for instance, HTML4.0 stop and XHTML begin? Where does XML come into the picture? Suggest a course of study that will make me competent on these matters. My objective, as I said before, is to make sure that I can not only read HTML code, but can write it as well without the aid of Dreamweaver.

Thanks in advance.
